Contact Source

prefs window contact source

The Contact Source section of the preferences allows you to choose which contacts are used as the source for all of JABMenu’s submenus.

1 Use Data Cache. By default, JABMenu will not cache its menus so that they are always up-to-date with Address Book. However, if you have a large contact database, this can make displaying the menus seem very unresponsive. To help alleviate this, you can choose to use the data cache. When this is enabled, the first time JABMenu populates a submenu, it will fetch the latest data from your Address Book database and use that data for subsequent display making the menus open much faster. Unfortunately, this means that modifications to your Address Book won't be reflected in the JABMenu submenus until you either quit & relaunch the application or clear the cache by clicking the “Clear Cache” button or selecting the “Clear Cache” menu item from the main menu. In addition, with the cache enabled, changes you make to the JABMenu display options will not be reflected in the actual menus until you clear the cache or relaunch JABMenu. With the cache disabled, changes to the display options will be seen immediately.

2 Clear Cache. If “Use Data Cache” is enabled, click this button to have JABMenu repopulate its submenus with the latest data from your Address Book the next time it displays a submenu. You may also select “Clear Cache” from the main menu to reset the cache without needing to reopen the preferences window.

3 Groups to Include. Initially, JABMenu will use all of your contacts. From this table, however, you can choose to include or exclude specific Address Book Groups from being included in your JABMenu submenus. Sometimes it can be tedious to click on all Groups to include or exclude them. To make this a bit easier, buttons on the right side of the table at the top of the scroll bar allow you to quickly “check” or “uncheck” all of your Groups.

To create a Group, use the Address Book application. Create the Group in the Group column; then select All in the Group column and drag desired contacts from the Name column onto the desired Group (or create a Smart Group and set the criteria for inclusion as desired, e.g., contacts in your country). Those contacts are now part of that Group. See the Address Book documentation for more information.

If you have added new groups while JABMenu is open, you can click the reload button on the right side of the table above the scroll bar to reload your Address Book Groups.

4 Use Networked Sources. On Mac OS X 10.6 or later, you can specify networked sources for contacts in the Address Book.app (e.g., Exchange or CardDAV servers). JABMenu can include contacts from these sources if you enable this option. Networked contacts will be included inline with contacts on your local Mac in the contact menus and will be included in the Lookup results. If, however, you find that this is taking an inordinate amount of time (network traffic can be slow), you may want to disable this option. To configure network sources, please see the Address Book.app documentation.

5 Show Related Groups. If you choose to limit the contact source to just one or more Address Book Groups, enabling this option will show related Address Book Groups in the Groups submenu for the contacts included in the Group(s) you’ve chosen. For example, if you choose to just use the Address Book Group “Business” as the contact source, with the ”Show Related Groups” option enabled, if there are member contacts in the “Business” Group that are also in the “Family” Group, the “Family” Group will also be shown in the Groups submenu but it will only include the members of the “Family” Group that are also part of the “Business” Group. Disabling this option will limit the Groups submenu to only show the Address Book Groups specified.
